Review of For The Stars
Aftenposten, 2001-04-17
- Svein Andersen; translated by David Christoffer Lier

Beautiful

5/6

A superb selection of songs and the wonderful arrangements makes von Otter succeed.

Elvis Costello possesses a unique ability to be successful regardless of musical barriers. In this case he is nurturing the mild beauty. The mezzo soprano Anne Sofie von Otter has shown us the need for a deeper understanding of the entire genre, to be able to interpret songs of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Tom Waits, Burt Bacharach, ABBA, or for that matter Costello himself and the Flesh Quartet.

The pop music holds its own language, and classically trained daredevils have left a trail of embarrassing moments. Von Otter is neither shaming her classical origin nor pop music with her populistic tiger leap. Moving and lovable.

Highlights: "Broken Bicycles/Junk", "The Other Woman" and "Like An Angel Passing Through My Room".
