Bass Player August 1996 Review By: Karl Coryat "Elvis Costello All This Useless Beauty [Warner Bros.] Bassists: Bruce Thomas, Roy Babbington Instruments: Thomas, Jerry Jones Longhorn Bass 4; Babbington, acoustic bass Bass Performance: A- Overall Performance: B+ What were Elvis & The Attractions *thinking* during their decade-long rift? They're back together for real, and the magic has returned -- although these days Thomas & Co. usually find themselves paring it down for Costello's smoky balladeering. Regardless, the band rocks hard on "Complicated Shadows" and the majestic "It's Time", with Thomas spewing neck-climbing fills as if it were still 1979. Also check out Bruce's catchy, descending scalar lick on the two-step stomper "Starting to Come to Me". Nashville bassists, look out!! "
