Il Sogno
In 2000 the Italian dance company Aterballetto commissioned Elvis Costello to write a ballet based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The hour-long score, orchestrated by Costello himself with help from Tilson Thomas, is a fragmentary succession of 24 short scenes which, though atmospheric at times, quite fail to capture the play’s colour and nuances, let alone comedy. Listening to it is like reading a novel written by someone with an incomplete grasp of the English language.
