The Rugrats Movie Soundtrack Entertainment Wire, 1998-10-07 "The Rugrats Movie" Soundtrack Features BLACKstreet, Mya, Ma$e, No Doubt with Elvis Costello, Busta Rhymes, Lisa Loeb, Devo, Rakim and More LOS ANGELES--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Oct. 7, 1998--This Nov. 20 marks the big screen debut of the Rugrats, television's most beloved babies, and the debut of a completely new kind of animated movie. "The Rugrats Movie," based on Nickelodeon's Emmy Award-winning animated series, marks the first feature-length adventure for the Rugrats and centers around the biggest adventure to happen in any household: the birth of a new baby. "The Rugrats Movie" is the first animated movie about a contemporary family and the first animated collaboration between Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies, both entertainment units of Viacom Inc. The film's accompanying soundtrack, "The Rugrats Movie Soundtrack Album" (Interscope Records), will be released on Nov. 3 and features an impressive and diverse array of music icons who were brought together by music supervisor and executive soundtrack producer Karyn Rachtman. The film's composer is Devo founder Mark Mothersbaugh. Mothersbaugh has been the composer for the "Rugrats" television series for every one of its episodes for the past six seasons. Also composing for the film is Jamshied Sharifi. The album's first single is a collaboration by BLACKstreet & Mya featuring Ma$e & Blinky Blink ("Take Me There"). Also featured on the soundtrack are contributions from all over the musical spectrum. There is an original song written and performed by Busta Rhymes ("On Your Marks, Get Set, Ready, Go!"), who is also the voice of the Reptar Wagon in the movie and the actual toy that will be available in stores. Other tracks include a song performed by No Doubt with Elvis Costello that Costello wrote specifically for the film ("She Throws Her Toys Around"); Lisa Loeb ("All Day"); newcomers 1,000 Clowns and Lisa Stone produced by Mario Caldatto of Beastie Boys fame ("Wild Ride"); and Rakim ("Take the Train"). One of the album's tracks, "This World is Something New to Me," was written by Mothersbaugh and has been described as a kind of cribside "We Are the World," thanks to the all-star cast of musicians who responded to Rachtman's call to collaborate on this anthemic song. Appearing on the track are Laurie Anderson, the B-52's, Beck, rapper B- Real of Cypress Hill, Jakob Dylan of The Wallflowers, Gordon Gano of The Violent Femmes, Lenny Kravitz, Lisa Loeb, Phife of A Tribe Called Quest, Iggy Pop, Lou Rawls, Dawn Robinson (formerly of En Vogue) and Patti Smith. All of these guest vocalists came into the studio at various times to lay down their tracks for the song, which takes place in the movie in a hospital nursery for newborns. Lisa Loeb, a Rugrats fan herself, was excited about lending her voice to an animated film. Of her experience collaborating on "This World is Something New to Me" she said, "It was weird taking my cue from baby cries." Iggy Pop was first drawn to the project because of Mothersbaugh, and after he completed his work, he said, "It's really cool to be a baby." "The Rugrats Movie Soundtrack Album" also includes a new Devo cover of the 60's classic "Witch Doctor," which resulted from Mothersbaugh calling together a performance of his old bandmates for a reunion. "`Rugrats' has turned into a kind of life after rock and roll for me," said the composer, who first got the gig when the show's creator, animator Gabor Csupo, tracked him down and told him he was a Devo fan and an admirer of Mothersbaugh's work. "That was the beginning of what's been a long history, scoring every episode of `Rugrats' to date." "I feel confident that we have successfully completed a timeless classic, pulling in talents from across the spectrum from Angelica, Chuckie and Tommy to No Doubt, Elvis Costello and Busta Rhymes," said Rachtman. "The Rugrats Movie," opening nationwide on Nov. 20, is produced by the award-winning animation studio Klasky Csupo Inc. and is a Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies presentation. The producers are Arlene Klasky and Gabor Csupo, creators with Paul Germain of this critically acclaimed, top-rated series. The film is directed by Norton Virgien and Igor Kovalyov, and written by David N. Weiss and J. David Stern. The executive producers are Albie Hecht and Debby Beece. Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies are both entertainment units of Viacom Inc. --30--RJ/la* RM/la CONTACT: Paramount Pictures, Hollywood Gregg Brilliant, 323/956-5872 or Interscope Records Publicity
