In the end the British pop singer got to meet his opera idol.
Today Elvis Costello and Anne Sofie von Otter are music history's oddest couple - who have made a record together.Elvis Costello has come a long way from the thinking punk idol to the role as a classic composer during his 25 years in the limelight.
Elvis Costello. Anne Sofie von Otter has had international success with both on opera and with her interpretations of German "lieds". Today she is one of our time's most remarkable mezzo sopranos.
SECRET ADMIRER
The collobratiion began with Costello being a bit of secret admirer. He went to several of Anne Sofie's concerts and also sent her flowers.
In the end Anne Sofie got to meet her admirer and in 1996 they performed together at Berwaldhallen in Stockholm.
"I must admit that when we met for the first time, I didn't know so much about Costello, I didn't have any of his records, and had only heard a few on the radio," says Anne Sofie.
"The most important thing in this project has been avoiding it sound like an opera singer doing pop music. I have chosen to sing with my natural voice."
BENNY AS GUEST ARTIST
On the album that she has now recorded, she interprets also Tom Waits, Paul McCartney, Nina Simone and Burt Bacharach. Some of the specially written Cotello songs are duets, and one of the guests is Benny Andersson. He plays accordion and is even involved in the ABBA song Like An Angel Passing Through My Room.
"It was a special moment to meet Benny," says Anne Sofie.
"I usually sing Hemma from Duvemåla during my romance song concerts. We have also agreed that Benny would write something new for one of my concerts, but that hasn't happened."

- How do Elvis' and your voices work together?
"With all respect to Elvis, I must say that they don't go together too well."- Are you friends now?
"He is extremely sociable, talks all the time, and has thousands of ideas, and is a very dynamic person. But I can't claim that I know him at a more personal level."

Family: Husband Benny Eriksson, director, and two sons, 9 and 12 years old.
Background: Between 7 and 12 years old lived in London since her father was a diplomat.
Education: Music Academy in Stockholm, Guildhall in London.
Current: Right now, new versions of folk songs. At the beginning of next year releases "Elvis Costello Meets Anne Sofie von Otter - A Musical Love Story".
Favourite Record by Costello: Cover records "Kojak Variety".
Christmas Celebrations: I shall be free and travel with my family to New York. On New Year's Eve, I shall make a small appearance at the Metopolitan, and then travel till Los Angeles for some concerts.

I dag är Elvis Costello och Ann Sofie von Otter musikhistoriens mest omaka par - som har en skiva ihop.Elvis Costello har gått hela vägen från tänkande punkikon till rollen som klassisk kompositör under sina 25 år i rampljuset.

Anne Sofie von Otter har haft internationella framgångar inom såväl opera som för sina tolkningar av tyska "lieder". I dag är en av vår tids främsta mezzosopraner.
Hemlig beundrare
Elvis Costello.
Samarbetet började med att Costello var lite av en hemlig beundrare. Han gick på flera av Anne Sofies konserter och skickade till och med blommor till henne.
Till slut fick Ann Sofie träffa sin beundrare och 1996 uppträdde de tillsammans i Berwaldhallen i Stockholm.
- När vi först träffades måste jag erkänna att jag inte hade så mycket koll på Costello, jag hade inga av hans skivor, hade bara hört en del på radion, säger Ann Sofie.
- Det viktigaste med det här projektet har varit att inte låta som en operasångare som gör popmusik. Jag har valt att sjunga med min naturliga röst.Benny som gästartist
På det album hon nu spelat in med Costello tolkar hon även Tom Waits, Paul McCartney, Nina Simone och Burt Bacharach. Några specialskrivna Costello- låtar är duetter och en av gästerna är Benny Andersson. Han spelar dragspel och medverkar även på Abba-låten "Angel passing through my room".
- Det var en högtidsstund att träffa Benny, säger Ann Sofie.
- Jag brukar sjunga "Hemma" från "Duvemåla" under mina romansaftnar. Vi har också pratat om att Benny skulle skriva något nytt till en av mina konserter, men det har inte blivit av.
- Hur fungerar Elvis och din röst tillsammans?
- Med all respekt för Costello måste jag säga att de inte passar så bra ihop.- Är ni kompisar nu?
- Han är väldigt social, snackar hela tiden och har tusen idéer, en mycket dynamisk person. Men jag kan inte påstå att jag känner honom på ett mer personligt plan.
