All This Useless Beauty: Elvis Costello Concocts Model Proposal for WB

Wednesday, November 8, 2000

NEW YORK — Fans who want to hear the latest Elvis Costello compositions should tune in to the WB next fall.

Elvis Costello is focusing his aim on a new teen show for the WB.

According to Variety, the songwriter-performer has signed with the network to create an hour-long teen dramedy, along with screenwriter-producer friend John Mankiewicz (Level 9, The Marshal). Costello collaborator T-Bone Burnett is also part of the deal. Imagine Television and Fox Television will produce.

The series will focus on the adventures of four ex-models turned rockers, and each episode will feature a new song from Costello, known for such tunes as "Everyday I Write the Book" and "Veronica."

Despite the success of last weekend's Charlie's Angels at the box office and a planned screen version of Josie and the Pussycats, Mankiewicz isn't planning for his rockers to fight crime.

"They're talented women in control of their own destiny. They won't be solving crimes. They'll be getting into adventures," Mankiewicz told Variety.

Costello, who said he might also show up in a cameo or two on the show, said in the trade paper: "It's about some beautiful girls who play rock 'n' roll songs and have a ball spending someone else's money. How can we lose?"

Given the quick disappearance of Models, Inc. in 1994, such logic may be flawed. But Costello, 46, has enough fans that the music element may prove a winning formula.

Fox Television is a subsidiary of News Corp, which also owns FOXNews.com.
