From a taped segment on KTLA-TV, Los Angeles "Morning News". Recorded 1996-08-26, aired 1996-08-27. Interviewed by Sam Rubin. SR: You have been exceptionally prolific. There's a lot of artists that I think of who put out an album every third or fourth year, rarely tour. You are very, very prolific. Is there just that much inside, or...? EC: It has been up until now, yes, yeah. I, um, I just seem to *keep makin' those records*, you know. SR: And people seem to turn out for these concerts, again and again. They're wonderful, wonderful shows. How does this show differ from your previous visits to LA? EC: Eh...well it differs in the sense it'll be my last one, for a good while. Possibly ever. SR: Now why do you say that? EC: I'm, eh, I'm gonna stop touring, and uh...possibly stop recording. SR: Really? Why? EC: Eh...I want to go and do some other things, for a while, I don't know. I'll see how I feel after maybe...maybe a couple of weeks, couple of months or a couple of years, I don't know. SR: I'm, I'm stunned to hear this! What gave you the...thought to... For somebody who's spent so much time in the recording studio and on the road...to *not* do it? What are the other things you'd like to do? EC: Ehm, well, I've got a lot of songs that I feel can exist outside of the...me performing them and eh...and outside of the routine of making records. As you said, I've done it every year for twenty years. I think now is as good a time as any to stop. SR: To that end, you have had your songs covered by dozens and dozens of artists. Is that *always* pleasing to you, or are you sometimes...? EC: Oh, sometimes it can be horrifying, because it doesn't turn out the way you imagined, but you've got to always, uh, take a deep breath, and think "Well they probably did it because they heard it that way." When I was younger I was ruder. Now I tend to think "Well, they probably wanted it to go that way" and...songs, if they're any good, can be sung more than one way, you know. I've been fortunate enough to have several songs recorded a number of times. And, um, in the case of this album, I took a second look at a couple of songs which had been previously recorded, and a couple of songs which I'd had in my bag but I hadn't found the right home for. And probably because I hadn't really thought of how best to record them. SR: And the song you're going to perform for us this morning...? EC: That's very much one of those, I mean it's a song that doesn't often make it into the concerts, because it's a very gentle song, and I thought, "Well I'll sing it for you tonight (sic)" because it may not make it into tonight's concert. You never know, 'cause, like I say, with the Attractions it's...we have a lot of repertoire, and we could do any number of songs, you know. So, ehm, let's see what happens.
