From Totally Live News (http://musiccentral.msn.com/TotallyLive) Elvis Costello Burns The Artist's Bridges It seems Robert Smith isn't the only one touchy about his songs (you recall a couple of days ago when we told you he'd refused to let a lookalike on a British TV show perform "Love Cats"). Now the Artist his purpleself has refused to allow Elvis Costello to cover "Pop Life" for Extreme Honey, his upcoming (and final) album for Warner Bros., due out October 17. We told you a few months ago that Costello and Danny Goffey, the drummer from Supergrass, had done a rather eccentric cover of the song from Prince's Around The World In A Day album. Apparently the Artist thought so too. You see, if you significantly alter a song, you need to get the copyright holder's permission to release it. So after old Elvis recorded it, he dutifully sent a copy to the Purple One, who instantly pooh-poohed it, refusing to allow Costello to release it. Undaunted, Costello took the tracks he and young Danny had cut and reworked them into his own original composition, which came to be called "The Bridge That I Burned." Do you think there was a message there?
