Review of Painted From Memory VG, 1998-10-07 - Kurt Bakkemoen Translated by Sverre Ronny Saetrum EXPLORING NEW WAYS REVIEW BY KURT BAKKEMOEN Elvis Costello is not afraid of exploring new ways and surprising his audience with unusual musical collaborations. This time the former British rocker is collaborating with the American popular- composer Burt Bacharach. Costello has found twelve, mainly unknown Bacharach compositions (sic) and is interpreting them in his own personal way, accompanied by the composer on piano. Costello's interpretations seems very faithful to the originals and the famous Bacharach chords shines through on several occasions. Many of the songs have a distinct melancholy feel to them, and personally I would have loved to hear a couple of the more famous Bacharach songs interpreted by Costello. Costello is obviously respectful of the American "master". Among the records best tracks are "In The Darkest Place", "The Sweetest Punch" and "Toledo". This is a record that should appeal to both Costello's fans and the more nostalgic friends of Burt Bacharach.
