Costello to Do Smith Tribute
Elvis Costello, Beck, Marianne Faithfull, Van Dyke Parks, Todd Rundgren, T Bone Burnett, Sam Phillips, Kate and Anna McGarrigle and the Folksmen (Spinal Tap alums Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest) are among the artists signed on for "Hal Willner's Harry Smith Project," a tribute to musicologist Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. The program, hosted by the University of California at Los Angeles' Performing Arts, is set for the university's Royce Hall on April 25th and 26th. The artists involved, including Richard Thompson, who will only appear on the first night, will offer up "radical reinterpretations" of some of the tracks from Smith's Anthology.
The performers will take the stage backed by a house band that includes guitarist Bill Frisell, multi-instrumentalist Ralph Carney, drummer Joey Waronker and guitarist Smokey Hormel. "Hal Willner's Harry Smith Project" made its debut in London in 1999.
In addition to the music, Smith will also be the topic of a two-day symposium, featuring lectures, discussions, films and other multi-media presentations, titled "Harry Smith: The Avant-Garde in the American Vernacular," which runs April 20-21 and is sponsored by the Harry Smith Archives and the Getty Research Institute.
