Review of Performance at MixFest 98 Elvis Costello and Steve Nieve Boston 1998-10-10, 7.15 pm From: alfonso cardenas Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head-MixFest 98 Just got back from a very wet evening with EC & SN. Set began an hour late at 7:15pm with EC decked out in a black fedora, gold scarf, brown leather jacket & Steve in a grey silk suit with short haircut. EC started out on acoustic guitar with Accidents Will Happen followed quickly by Red Shoes & then Everyday I Write The Book. The he introduced Steve to start Talking In The Dark in which Steve played some great grand piano at the end of the song with EC looking on with great pleasure & respect. Then he did a new song he wrote with Burt Bacarach, Toledo with the some new lyrics added at the end to great effect. The raindrops started to come down heavier & God's Comic was played with a segue into Less Than Zero. Veronica followed with the intro he has used since Japan 96. Then he asked the crowd if they knew who Regis & Kathie Lee were? If they did they'd know the next song, I Still Have That Other Girl. Despite a powerful vocal the crowd was getting restless as the rain fell harder. EC changed to his silver Fender Jazzmaster & announced that he was going to do another 10 ballads! The crowd got to hear Alison as EC went to the hits. A quick Shallow Graves gave way to Detectives & the evening ended with Peace, Love & Understanding as the monsoon poured down on us. EC said goodbye after a too short 45 minute set, but EC was a real pro to play under such dangerous conditions. I hope that his voice will be in top shape for Tuesdays show at Radio City in NYC. EC did reiterate from the stage that he plans to return to Boston with Burt Bacarach next year! Looking forward to more of PFM. Time to dry off.......later........ Lorenzo
