Having had six months of playing since they were here in May, the band has never played better. A highlight is EC's guitar playing, he takes many solos and duplicates the original recorded guitar parts on such older tunes as Can't Stand Up and PLU. From: tgm@deng.icl.co.uk (Terry Marshall) Thanks for posting the set list for: > University of East Algiers > Norwich, England > 11/5/94 UEA is a bit of an old stamping ground for Elvis: during the gig he claimed to have played there 25 times (a fib), the first time before the freshers in the audience were born. This last may be true: he visited with the Stiff's Greatest Stiffs Live show (EC+A, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Wreakless Eric, Nick Lowe, Larry Thingy, Rachel Sweet?? and ??). This was in 77 (or 76?, I'm getting a bit hazy the past these days). Parts of the subsequent live album were recorded at this gig, anyone know which tracks were recorded where? Though Elvis had to stamp some way into the eastern backwaters to get to UEA, he didn't have to go quite as far as Algeria - looks like some one at Warner's had a spell-checker cock up on the word "Anglia" A few thoughts on the gig: - Alison seems to be the hook to hang cover versions/fun bits on: other gigs have had Tracks of My Tears/Tears of a Clown/Clowntime is Over append. Here we got a timely Indoor Fireworks (the 5th is Guy Fawkes - Bonfire/Firework Night). - I like the running order joke which kicks off with "I Want You" and ends the main set with "You Belong To Me" - make luuuuve to audience. - Most revalued song: Deep Dark Truthful Mirror - a real standout, now one of my all-time faves. - Very good sound in smallish venue (1000 - 1200, standing only). All the vocals were clear. - What happend to my favourite BY tracks, Favourite Hour, You Tripped at Every Step, Still Too Soon To Know? (You can't have everything). General point: does anyone else get irked by the ritual "short main set, many encores" format. I like my encores to at least appear spontaneous. These days audience and band both seem to be play acting - if the house lights are off they'll be more, if there not it's over. Lets have a full main set and if it's really good, genuine encores. Cheers, Terry.
