Wow.

I had been envious of accounts I had heard where EC gave
really *intense* shows. The two previous shows I had been
to (The horse manure palace at Toronto's CNE, 1982 and
Kingswood, 1991) were professional but lacking the extra
bit of magic displayed Friday night in Kingswood (Toronto).

I had the uncanny sensation that EC knew this would be
his last tour with the Attractions- they certainly played
like it was their last time around, and EC's comment
before "All the Rage" that it had been a while since they
had been together in Toronto, and didn't know when (or if)
they would ever return, seemed to imply they were aware
of this.

Concert Nits:
Very few. EC sounded decidedly off-key during
"Pony Street" and "London's Brilliant Parade", leading me
to wonder whether there were some monitor problems earlier on.
These are both relatively new songs and contain non-trivial
intervals to sing, so it would make sense that these would
be candidates for missteps.

High Points:
Many. EC seemed to be clearly enjoying himself, and
the band was extremely tight. I'm really glad I had a chance
to hear Steve Nieve once again- his playing was nothing short
of inspired and brilliant all night. Among EC's noted pursuits
in the last few years of learning to drive, read music and
learn classical chamber music, he must have surely spent
time practising his guitar chops. His playing was inventive enough
to make me forget about Marc Ribot's contributions on the last
tour.
Equally impressive were the care and reverence placed equally
on older and newer material. "Party Girl", "Alison", "What's So funny .."
were faithful arrangements, but there was genuine care and passion
behind each of these plus the other older songs. We were indeed
treated to the Attractions' backup vocals on "20% Amnesia", as well
as previously mentioned medleys of "Tracks of my Tears" and "Tears of A
Clown" tacked on to the end of "Alison", snippets of "Tequila"
and "My favourite things", and a very tender version of "Deep, Dark
Truthful Mirror". "Lipstick Vogue" and "Beyond Belief" were killers.
