 Bootleg Recordings
 ==================

 Note: Some boots here are rated (by Joachim Weisbrod) using a +/0/- system.
       '+' doesn't mean comparable to a studio album, it's just a relative
       rating concerning the circumstances under which such an album is
       recorded.

ACOUSTIC TALES LIVE (53:39)

[19__-__-__; CD; Three Cool Cats TTC 039] Live solo performance. Landgraaf, 15-May-89. Quality: Nice performance, particularly "I Want You" & "Pump It Up", but it suffers from being an audience recording. The quality fluctuates sometimes and you can hear members of the audience talking. (3 out of 5) - Paul Hosken {paul.hosken@dlr.de} Performance: 7/10. Sound: 5/10 - John Steffes {john.c.steffes@jci.com} Accidents Will Happen (2:50) I Want You (5:28) Deep Dark Truthful Mirror (4:50) Oliver's Army (2:59) (listed as Watching The Detectives (4:07) "All Of The Zombies") New Amsterdam/Hide Your Love Away Radio Sweetheart/Jackie Wilson Said (1:36/2:53) (I'm In Heaven When You Smile) God's Comic (5:06) [Van Morrison] (2:37/2:12) Veronica [EC/McCartney] (3:25) (listed as "Get It All Hang Out") Alison (2:57) Pump It Up (4:07) Pads, Paws And Claws (2:51) Tramp The Dirt Down (3:40)

AGING GRACEFULLY (63:40/61:52)

[1996-__-__; 2xCD; DickyPoo Productions 1800269] Local radio KFOG broadcast of the Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco show, 15-May-96. EC is only accompanied by Steve Nieve. Complete set. Quality: Great show, great sound quality - Harson Flenco {harson@ix.netcom.com} The sound is very good (8/10) and the performance is as brilliant as I remembered it (9/10). "My Dark Life" is particularly good. A couple of brief audio glitches here & there, but nothing too serious - T.J.Young {young057@gold.tc.umn.edu} Very nice performance, excellent quality. Sounds more like it's from master tapes than a radio broadcast. EC is very relaxed and talkative. One of the best boots around - Francois Drouin {francois.drouin@dassault-aviation.fr} I'm going to be excessively hard on this and say that although it is an excellent boot, the sound could be better (9/10). I can also think of better song selections, it naturally relies too much on tracks from All This Useless Beauty. (Performance: 9/10) - Paul Hosken {hosken@c31.rb.op.dlr.de} DISC 1: DISC 2: EC solo: Other End Of The Telescope Just About Glad (3:43) [EC/Aimee Mann] (5:44) Starting To Come To Me (3:45) Accidents Will Happen (3:37) (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red All This Useless Beauty (5:57) Shoes (2:40) It's Time (5:54) Little Atoms (4:55) 1st. encore: EC + Steve: EC solo: Temptation (new arr.) AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PRESS CONFERENCE

[19__-__-__; 7" 33 1/3 picture disc; BSAPC+7-1] Although this picture disc contains pictures relating to EC on both sides (the cover photo from Nashville & More and interview text from the 'Spike' era) its contents seems to contain no EC. The press conference is in connection with their 'Conspiracy of Hope' tour. 4 or 5 artists are featured - Tracy Chapman and possibly Sting, Peter Gabriel & Bruce Springsteen. In the runout grooves is "Porky" and "Orlake", so possibly this is a legitimate promo disc.

ANGRY YOUNG SOD (53:24)

[19__-__-__; CD; Turtle Records TR-209] This is the Agora, Cleveland, 5-Dec-77 concert. CD case unfolds to 8 coloured photographs. (No Dancing & Live Vol.1 are of better quality). (NB: I believe that Turtle Records no longer exist). Quality: '0' - Joachim Weisbrod {weisbrod@fzi.de} Performance: 9/10. APRIL'S FOOL

[19__-__-__; 2xLP; Car Co./Sun Records] Declan MacManus concert on 1-Apr-89, University of Rhode Island. Double LP taken from a high quality audience tape of an acoustic gig. Quality: Variable - sometimes very thin - Kube, Peter {p.kube@rz.uni-sb.de} EC is relaxed, playful & spontaneous. Sound is wobbly at times. All versions of the songs are unique due to the acoustic element. Each side is 25-30 mins. long - Bruce White {brucew8940@aol.com} Performance: 7/10. Sound: 6/10 - John Steffes {john.c.steffes@jci.com} SIDE 1: SIDE 2: Accidents Will Happen God's Comic/Last Train To Lovable Clarksville Let 'em Dangle Veronica [EC/McCartney] New Amsterdam Green Shirt The Other End (of the Telescope)/ Danger Zone You've Got To Hide Your Love Away Pads, Paws, and Claws/Blood And [EC/Aimee Mann/Lennon/McCartney] Chocolate/Uncomplicated/Not Fade The Big Light Away (not listed) Radio Sweetheart/Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile) [Van Morrison] SIDE 3: SIDE 4: Brilliant Mistake (titled "King 2nd encore: Of America")/Tangled Up In Blue (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red This Town Shoes/It Won't Be Wrong I Want You Alison encore with Nick Lowe: "Bring me up a sinner"-3rd encore: (Marie's The Name of) His Latest Pump It Up (with drum machine Flame (listed as "His Latest Fan") and electric guitar) (What's so Funny 'bout) Peace, Letterman show (3-Mar-89): Love and Understanding Pads, Paws, and Claws Leave My Kitten Alone [John Turner/McDougall] + interview

ARMED AND DANGEROUS

[19__-__-__; LP; Impossible Recordworks IMP 1-32] EC+A, Riviera Theatre, Chicago, 3-Dec-77). This show can also be found on disc 2 of the Exit boot. Quality: Very good - Andrew Smallman {smallman@cyberspace.com} There's a fair bit of surface noise on my copy, but the basic recording is very good, either soundboard or radio. A great performance - Phil Dennison {cbas68@ccsun.strath.ac.uk} God-awful, terrible, miserable, worthless - this LP is so poorly recorded that it makes the performers appear to be talentless hacks! - Timothy E. These CDs are home made (only 20 copies!), but there is a rumour that they will get distributed as normal bootleg CDs. Quality: Good sounding audience DAT recording. Great atmosphere with the audience singing along to lots of the songs. BRILLIANT PARADE (67:07/62:21)

[19__-__-__; 2xCD; My Phenix Co./Superb Quality Series SQS 009/010] Soundboard recording of the Kosei Nenkin Hall, Tokyo, 22-Sep-94, concert from the Japanese Brutal Youth Tour. On the cover it says "Super Quality Series, limited edition 1000 copies". Quality: Mix is very good, all instruments & vocals are exactly where you want them. Audience noise is kept to a minimum - Dean Martucci {martucci@surf.com} Steve's a bit high in the mix, and EC's guitar isn't very loud - Gary {slug@mail.utexas.edu} Performance: 7/10. Sound: 7/10 - John Steffes {john.c.steffes@jci.com} It sounds like it was lifted from Steves monitor mix. As such, the keyboard parts have a clarity that is seldom heard on live recordings. Aside from the keys, the bass and drums are remarkably clear as is EC's voice. This is one of the clearest recordings of his voice I have ever heard with what sounds like very little to no effects on it. The only thing that is at all distant is the guitar. This is a fascinating show full of old favorites heard from a fresh perspective. I have very seldom heard a disc that sounds as if you are on stage as opposed to in the seats, but this is definitely one of them - Eddie Gorodetsky {eddieg@cerf.net} DISC 1: DISC 2: Pony Street (4:02) So Like Candy (5:01) Waiting For The End Of The World This Year's Girl (3:22) (2:52) (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Beyond Belief (3:51) Shoes (2:42) Sulky Girl (6:33) Mystery Dance (2:04) London's Brilliant Parade (4:16) You Belong To Me (2:23) Deep Dark Truthful Mirror (5:00) 13 Steps Lead Down/Radio Radio Oliver's Army (4:21) (7:12) You'll Never Be A Man (3:12) Encore: Temptation (2:37) Favourite Hour (5:16) New Lace Sleeves (4:43) Uncomplicated (5:33) Clown Strike (6:15) Lipstick Vogue (4:26) Kinder Murder (3:24) Watching The Detectives (listed as Shabby Doll (5:29) "Waiting The Detectives") (6:40) Rocking Horse Road (6:24) Little Triggers (2:58) Brilliant Mistake (4:00) Alison (5:04) Peace, Love & Understanding (listed as "Peace, Love & Underground") (3:16) Pump It Up (6:13)

BUDDY HOLLY ON ACID (78:30)

[1994-__-__; CD/CAS; Insect IST 44 (Italy)] On the cover it says "Recorded at the Forum, Europe; Mid. July 1994; Soundboard recording", but this is the Foro Italico, Rome concert, 19-Jul-94. There's 2.5 minutes of dead air between tracks 2 & 3 while a technical problem is fixed that should have been edited out. Quality: Sounds great, 8-9. I'd give it a 10 but the keyboards are mixed too high and the bass is too quiet. Performance is at least an 8. The highlights are the BY numbers, EC is in great voice - Jacobson, David {david.jacobson@hofbbs.com} Sound is pretty good (not great) and the setlist is solid, if a tad obvious - Timothy E. Young {young057@gold.tc.umn.edu} Performance: 9/10. COVERS

[CD] EC sings other artists' songs in the studio. Track listing is as for The Great Lost Album. Quality: Poor - Paul Hosken {paul.hosken@dlr.de} Tough to rate because the songs are fantastic, and the performance of EC & the Confederates make them even better. It makes a change hearing EC use a laid-back bluesy approach. I listen to this a lot, and that's the best testimony. On the other hand the sound quality is terrible - the tape hiss on the quieter songs makes them almost unlistenable. The dynamic range is also bad. The Great Lost Album & Barbados Mega Mixes are similar to this, but in a better quality. For those who can wait, EC is intending to release this set one day! - Timothey E Young {young057@gold.tc.umn.edu}

ELVIS COSTELLO WITH STEVE NIEVE (JAPAN TOUR 1999)

[9904; 2xCDR; NO SMOKERS MFC 2-99208] Complete Costello & Nieve show, Fukuoka, 8-Feb-99. Quality: Audience DAT. The sound quality is not good. This show was a clubhouse gig and because of this the sound is often split. However, the atomosphere of show is more friendly from that of a hall concert. Elvis sings with care, particularly on "God Give Me Strength". The bad sound quality is a pity, but despite this the boot still has a strong point. In such a small venue the unmiced last track was recorded clearly, so the climax can be enjoyed. [99; CD; Faith (Japan)] Costello & Nieve at the Fuji Rock Festival, 1-Aug-98, combined with the BBC broadcast of the Costello/Bacharach show at the Royal Festival Hall, 29-Oct-98.

EVERYDAY I PLAY THE BOOT

[2xLP(+7"); Off-Beat (COS-1/2/3/4 inscribed on discs)] Almost the complete set from Pier 84, NYC, 10-Aug-83. This was originally released with the first 2 songs badly mismastered. The rest of both discs was fine, pretty standard bootleg quality. Shortly afterwards the bootlegger released a 7" with corrected versions of the tracks. It was supposed to be given away free to people who had already bought the album. (Honour among thieves!) The single came in a plain white sleeve with record labels that were different to the album labels, but in the same style: a comic-book-like picture of a man in a fedora reading a newspaper, orange on one side and white on the other (no type). Quality: ECIS reports that copy quality of this audience recording varies from very good mono to poor. The fine playing from EC+A & the TKO Horns makes up for the shartfall in quality. The version of "Tears Before Bedtime" with the Horns is probably quite unusual. This has such bad sound quality that I didn't even bother to tape it! - Melinda Hale {xmelinda@iglou.com} (Maybe Melinda had a mismastered copy!) [CD; Living Legend Records LLRCD 120 (Italy)] Cover states that this was recorded at the Tower Theatre, Philadelphia, USA, but it is really from The Spectrum, Philadelphia, 11-Aug-84 (same as King Biscuit Hour). Track list is the same as Elvis Costello Live "Unlicensed" and Writing My Story. Quality: Excellent quality (9/10) - Paul Hosken {paul.hosken@dlr.de} Performance: 7/10. EXIT

[2xLP; Toasted Records 2S 919] Disc 1 is the Canadian promo LP El Mocambo Club, disc 2 is of the same 1977 gig that's on the Armed & Dangerous boot (Riviera Theatre, Chicago, 3-Dec-77). Manufactured by Finestkind Records & Tapes LTD, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. There is no name on the album but the cover consists of a girl wearing boxer's shorts and robe, slightly open, as she leans against the ropes. She is under an exit sign, so possibly the album is called Exit. The girl on the back cover is VERY bizarre! The photos on this professionally packaged album are by Helmut Newton. GOOD YEAR FOR THE COVERS VOLUME 1 (69:40)

[98; CD; TNT 10] As the title suggests this is a compilation from various live sources of Elvis performing covers. The sound quality if very nice, especially considering the range of sources. All tracks are cover versions. The album was eventually officially released as Kojak Variety. Quality: 7/10. GREATEST HITS LIVE (70:26)

[94; CD; Chartbusters CHER-004-A] This seems to be portions of other boots stitched together into one show. Possible sources could be El Mocambo, Stiffs Live, Westwood One shows, etc. There is no liner notes or documentation. Quality: Overall the sound quality is good to excellent, but some tracks sound pretty awful. There's a lot of high end and hiss, as if radio broadcasts were the main source. Quality: Sound quality is quite good, with only "Everybody's Crying Mercy" being marred by brief fade-outs and buzzes. [96; CD; Moontunes MOON 015 (Luxembourg)] Best of EC's 3 night solo acoustic support sets for Dylan's March '95 gigs at the Brixton Academy, London. [95; 2xCD; Flip 001/002 / Chance Records] Apollo Theatre, Oxford (27-Nov-94), plus bonus tracks from Shepherds Bush Empire, London (4,11,25-Nov-94). Quality: Performance - 9-10. Sound - very good (7-9) for Oxford show, wasn't sure at first whether this was a board or audience tape, crowd noise is at a minimum. Sound on bonus tracks varies from good to very good for an audience tape. Sound is much better than the Glastonbury boot. Nice to have the Wendy James and 4 new songs together in one place.
