Bootleg Recordings
==================
Note: Some boots here are rated (by Joachim Weisbrod) using a +/0/- system.
'+' doesn't mean comparable to a studio album, it's just a relative
rating concerning the circumstances under which such an album is
recorded.

ACOUSTIC TALES LIVE (53:39)
[19__-__-__; CD; Three Cool Cats TTC 039]
Live solo performance. Landgraaf, 15-May-89.
Quality: Nice performance, particularly "I Want You" & "Pump It Up", but
it suffers from being an audience recording. The quality
fluctuates sometimes and you can hear members of the audience
talking. (3 out of 5) - Paul Hosken {paul.hosken@dlr.de}

Local radio KFOG broadcast of the Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco show,
15-May-96. EC is only accompanied by Steve Nieve. Complete set.
Quality: Great show, great sound quality - Harson Flenco
{harson@ix.netcom.com}
The sound is very good (8/10) and the performance is as brilliant
as I remembered it (9/10). "My Dark Life" is particularly good. A
couple of brief audio glitches here & there, but nothing too
serious - T.J.Young {young057@gold.tc.umn.edu}
Very nice performance, excellent quality. Sounds more like it's
from master tapes than a radio broadcast. EC is very relaxed and
talkative. One of the best boots around - Francois Drouin
{francois.drouin@dassault-aviation.fr}
I'm going to be excessively hard on this and say that although it
is an excellent boot, the sound could be better (9/10). I can
also think of better song selections, it naturally relies too
much on tracks from All This Useless Beauty. (Performance: 9/10)

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PRESS CONFERENCE
[19__-__-__; 7" 33 1/3 picture disc; BSAPC+7-1]
Although this picture disc contains pictures relating to EC on both sides
(the cover photo from Nashville & More and interview text from the
'Spike' era) its contents seems to contain no EC. The press conference is
in connection with their 'Conspiracy of Hope' tour. 4 or 5 artists are
featured - Tracy Chapman and possibly Sting, Peter Gabriel & Bruce
Springsteen. In the runout grooves is "Porky" and "Orlake", so possibly
this is a legitimate promo disc.
ANGRY YOUNG SOD (53:24)

Quality: Variable - sometimes very thin - Kube, Peter {p.kube@rz.uni-sb.de}
EC is relaxed, playful & spontaneous. Sound is wobbly at times.

Quality: Very good - Andrew Smallman {smallman@cyberspace.com}

Quality: Mix is very good, all instruments & vocals are exactly where you

Gary {slug@mail.utexas.edu}
Performance: 7/10. Sound: 7/10 - John Steffes
{john.c.steffes@jci.com}
It sounds like it was lifted from Steves monitor mix. As such,
the keyboard parts have a clarity that is seldom heard on live
recordings. Aside from the keys, the bass and drums are remarkably
clear as is EC's voice. This is one of the clearest recordings of
his voice I have ever heard with what sounds like very little to
no effects on it. The only thing that is at all distant is the
guitar. This is a fascinating show full of old favorites heard
from a fresh perspective. I have very seldom heard a disc that
sounds as if you are on stage as opposed to in the seats, but
this is definitely one of them - Eddie Gorodetsky {eddieg@cerf.net}

There's 2.5 minutes of dead air between tracks 2 & 3 while a technical
problem is fixed that should have been edited out.
Quality: Sounds great, 8-9. I'd give it a 10 but the keyboards are mixed
too high and the bass is too quiet. Performance is at least an 8.

[CD]
EC sings other artists' songs in the studio. Track listing is as for The
Great Lost Album.
Quality: Poor - Paul Hosken {paul.hosken@dlr.de}
Tough to rate because the songs are fantastic, and the
performance of EC & the Confederates make them even better. It
makes a change hearing EC use a laid-back bluesy approach. I
listen to this a lot, and that's the best testimony. On the other
hand the sound quality is terrible - the tape hiss on the quieter
songs makes them almost unlistenable. The dynamic range is also
bad. The Great Lost Album & Barbados Mega Mixes are similar
to this, but in a better quality. For those who can wait, EC is
intending to release this set one day! - Timothey E Young

ELVIS COSTELLO WITH STEVE NIEVE (JAPAN TOUR 1999)
[9904; 2xCDR; NO SMOKERS MFC 2-99208]
Complete Costello & Nieve show, Fukuoka, 8-Feb-99.
Quality: Audience DAT. The sound quality is not good. This show was a
clubhouse gig and because of this the sound is often split.
However, the atomosphere of show is more friendly from that of a
hall concert. Elvis sings with care, particularly on "God Give
Me Strength". The bad sound quality is a pity, but despite this
the boot still has a strong point. In such a small venue the
unmiced last track was recorded clearly, so the climax can be
enjoyed.

BBC broadcast of the Costello/Bacharach show at the Royal Festival Hall,
29-Oct-98.
EVERYDAY I PLAY THE BOOT
[2xLP(+7"); Off-Beat (COS-1/2/3/4 inscribed on discs)]
Almost the complete set from Pier 84, NYC, 10-Aug-83. This was originally
released with the first 2 songs badly mismastered. The rest of both discs
was fine, pretty standard bootleg quality. Shortly afterwards the
bootlegger released a 7" with corrected versions of the tracks. It was
supposed to be given away free to people who had already bought the album.
(Honour among thieves!) The single came in a plain white sleeve with
record labels that were different to the album labels, but in the same
style: a comic-book-like picture of a man in a fedora reading a newspaper,
orange on one side and white on the other (no type).
Quality: ECIS reports that copy quality of this audience recording varies
from very good mono to poor. The fine playing from EC+A & the TKO
Horns makes up for the shartfall in quality. The version of
"Tears Before Bedtime" with the Horns is probably quite unusual.
This has such bad sound quality that I didn't even bother to tape
it! - Melinda Hale {xmelinda@iglou.com} (Maybe Melinda had a
mismastered copy!)

EXIT
[2xLP; Toasted Records 2S 919]
Disc 1 is the Canadian promo LP El Mocambo Club, disc 2 is of the same
1977 gig that's on the Armed & Dangerous boot (Riviera Theatre, Chicago,
3-Dec-77). Manufactured by Finestkind Records & Tapes LTD, Sydney, New
South Wales, Australia. There is no name on the album but the cover
consists of a girl wearing boxer's shorts and robe, slightly open, as she
leans against the ropes. She is under an exit sign, so possibly the album
is called Exit. The girl on the back cover is VERY bizarre! The photos
on this professionally packaged album are by Helmut Newton.
Quality: Good quality stereo FM broadcasts or PA recordings.

(THE) GREAT LOST ALBUM (54:13)
[CD; Caucasian Records CD 002]
From liner notes: This album was recorded in early 1991 and was scheduled
as the follow up to Mighty Like A Rose. All tracks are cover versions.
The album was eventually officially released as Kojak Variety.
Quality: 7/10. All tracks are fully produced studio recordings, but at
times the sound is a little muddy and the tape hiss is high.
Despite this I'd recommend it. (The Barbados Mega Mixes CD is
supposed to sound better) - Paul Hosken {paul.hosken@dlr.de}

[94; CD; Chartbusters CHER-004-A]
This seems to be portions of other boots stitched together into one show.
Possible sources could be El Mocambo, Stiffs Live, Westwood One shows, etc.
There is no liner notes or documentation.
Quality: Overall the sound quality is good to excellent, but some tracks
sound pretty awful. There's a lot of high end and hiss, as if
radio broadcasts were the main source. Nice to have for the live

CD is basically the same as the one with the same name on the Amcos label
except that a second version of "Bama Lama Bama Loo" (from 'Later With
Jools Holland', 16-May-95) is included as the last track.
Quality: Sound quality is quite good, with only "Everybody's Crying Mercy"
being marred by brief fade-outs and buzzes. And, of course, EC's
voice is a rather hoarse (except for the 2nd. version of "Bama
Lama Bama Loo" where he sounds in fine shape) - T.J.Young

that the gig was at the Lehigh Community College).
Quality: '0' - Joachim Weisbrod {weisbrod@fzi.de}
The sound quality is far from perfect (a bit treble-heavy, which
at least makes the keyboards stand out), I'd rate it better than
'not that great', and the performance and set list make the disc
fairly worthwhile.
The opening track is a bit tinny and distorted, after that it
improves but stays 'raw'. A must have for the EC fan. This
concert follows within a month of the 'Bramlett incident' on a
tour that was cut short. The guitar parts on "Chelsea" are worth
hearing, and in general his playing is jagged and vicious

The sound isn't as good as I had hoped - for the most part it is
very good to excellent, but there are spots where the sound fades

The sound quality is top notch (one of the best audience tapes I've come

Elvis is incredibly impassionated-- "High Fidelity" and "Riot Act" easily
rank among my favorite renditions I've heard to date, and "I Threw It All
Away" is painfully heartfelt. - T.J. Young {DeeThomaz@aol.com}

show was officially released on the 'A Case For Song' video.
Quality: Sound is decent, though the bass is muddy on the Attractions

"Upon A Veil Of Midnight Blue" performed with a chamber jazz
septet, and the accordion version of "Pump It Up" - T.J.Young

Quality: Very good audience recording, almost soundboard quality.
There are a few glitches, such as a 2 second gap during
"Rocking Horse Road", and that the louder tracks tend to
distort. EC's voice is in magnificent form and it's a good
passionate performance. Not too much audience noise.
Performance: 8.5 (out of 10). Sound: 8.5 - recommended

(A) NEW YEAR FOR THE ROSES (~40 mins)
[LP; Note Records LPEC-Roses-1]
Live at The Palladium, NYC, 31-Dec-81. According to the cover: "This album
features the seldom performed songs from EC's classic country album
Almost Blue that was almost universally overlooked by both fans and
critics alike. For this performance, the group is joined by Mr. John McFee
(Clover) on pedal steel guitar. Enjoy it now, you may never hear these
tunes again." The title on the label is 'Lucky Stevens Sings'!
Quality: The cover claims that this is a soundboard recording, but it
certainly doesn't sound much like one. Overall, I'd give the
sound quality (on the live tracks) 5/10, and the performance 7/10.
It's got novelty value because it draws almost exclusively from
Almost Blue songs - Timothy E. Young {young057@gold.tc.umn.edu}
The sound quality is pretty good. Interesting arrangements as
they differ from the album versions, particularly "Success"

OUR AIM IS TRUE (~50 min)
[CD/LP(clear/yellow/red/black/flurescent); Hand Made/Stiff S-3230]
EC studio demos with Flip City, Nov-75. This boot looks convincingly like
a legitimate Stiff promo LP. The LP cover is taken from an old Stiff black
& white flyer, with the same checkerboard 'Elvis Is King' background as
MAIT. It has a front-face portrait of EC which has the following text in
the corner:
"HELP US HYPE ELVIS
Today is your lucky day. In your hands, an unashamed promotional
scam courtesy of Stiff Records. We are trying to sell records and
make Elvis a huge star. He is trying to pay off his mortgage. You
have been recommended by .......... who was courteous enough to pay
the postage. We were gracious enough to pay the album costs. El
waived his royalties. So now we've done our bit - you do yours.
Clamp your ears around this disc. If you like it spread the word.
Play it. Pollute the metropolis. If you don't like it, remember
that we know who you are and that we have your address. Our address
is Stiff Records, 32 Alexander Street, London W2.
All feedback not unwelcome."

copied from a 7" boot from the amount of surface noise. The other
tracks are very good quality - Phil Dennison

(A copy of the original was also issued on Chance Records (a subsidary of

mention of a catalogue number anywhere).
Collection of rarities and b-sides. About half the tracks are live. It
seems that there are 2 pressings of this CD, the later one has the label
printed on the front cover. I don't know if there is any difference in the
quality of the 2, and I assume that the track listing is the same.
Quality: Great sound throughout - Live! Music Review (June)
Sound isn't as good as some boots, but the material is good. Some
of the live stuff sounds muffled - Kristin Archick
{karchick@emerald.tufts.edu}
Excellent material & sound, and one of the best boots I've heard
(9/10). I've compared a number of these tracks with the original
vinyl & CDs and the treble lacks a little 'brightness', like when
recording with Dolby. Also, there is occasional tape drop-out
(most noticable at the start of "Mischievous Ghost"). However,
these are very minor defects - Paul Hosken {paul.hosken@dlr.de}

PUMP IT UP
[LP; tropo/takrl 321 (Kornyfone?)]
Probably a stereo FM broadcast from a US gig in 1977. The front cover is a
black & white close-up of Elvis, while the back has the track list plus a
photo of EC & Darryl Hall taken from the video of "The Only Flame In Town".
It seems that this bootleg was itself bootleged as some copies simply have
a Xeroxed copy of the Darryl Hall photo pasted on a plain white cover.
Quality: Ripping performance. My second favourite show of this period.

make this anthology of radio recordings not as good as it could be. There

RADIOACTIVITY (71:56)
[CD; Gold Standard SAY-03 'A Long Way From Home']
The cover says that this soundboard or radio recording of EC+A is from the
Old Waldorf Theatre, San Franciso, Nov-78, but this is incorrect as it
contains songs (as they were broadcast on KSAN-FM) from the late and early
shows from 15-Nov-77 at the same venue.
Quality: The sound is extremely flat & muffled. For the most part, the
guitar seems conspiciously absent, which contributes a certain
hollowness to the songs. However, the set list is good and the
band is in good form. Sound: 5, performance: 7. It's not in the
same league as Live At El Morcambo or No Dancing - Timothy E.

[84; 2xLP; Sphynx Records B.V]
Sides 1-3 of this Dutch bootleg were recorded at a Rockpalast show in
the Grugahalle, Essen, Germany, 15-Oct-83. EC is backed by the TKO Horns
and Afrodiziac. The cover says side 4 is from the Apollo Theatre, Glasgow,
Scotland, 10-Dec-80, but this is the same show that's on the Shaken Not
Stired & Something New boots, where Steve Nieve is replaced by Martin
Belmont, which means that its from The Hope & Anchor, London, 14-May-80.
Quality: Pretty good sound, just slightly distant & boomy. Sounds fine
after you get used to the ambiance of the room he's playing in.

[96; CD; TONE-2 CD004]
An unlikely combination of shows, juxtaposing a furious early rocker with
the classical sound of the Brodsky's material. The early material is from
the Rockpalast show, Koeln, 21-Jun-78, and not from Bremen, 15-Jun-78, as
stated on the cover.
Quality: The 78 gig is even better than the legit El Mocambo disc because
of the remarkable sound quality. There's hardly any crowd noise
and the show really rocks. The Royal College material is the
same as on A Royal Performance, but this also includes "I
Almost Had A Weakness". A great boot - Harson Flenco

Although the cover says California, this is a boot of the El Mocambo show,
6-Mar-78. "Heart Of The City" is one of the 4 songs performed as encores
with Nick Lowe, and is clumsily inserted after the opening chord to
"Miracle Man".

[92; CD; Turtle Records TR 16 (Australia)]
Sydney, Australia, 2-Jun-82. CD case unfolds to 8 coloured photographs.
(NB: I believe that Turtle Records no longer exist).
Quality: 'Reasonably good. The material from This Year's Model is given
very cool live treatment, and is played at an incredibly fast
speed' - {boojum1660@aol.com}
I wouldn't say that the songs are performed 'incredibly fast'. To
me the tempo seems quite normal. However, I do agree that the
treatment of the songs is nice - it's just a shame that the
recording quality doesn't do them justice. The bass is a little
too boomy, the top end is a bit harsh, and the mid-range is
lacking. But, despite this, all instruments and EC's vocals can
be clearly heard. For me the worst problem with the sound is a
sort of interference (like on a weak radio sender) that comes and
goes, and seems to get steadily worse as the set goes on.
Unfortunately it's the better performances like 'Alison',
'Clowntime Is Over' & 'Good Year For The Roses' that suffer the
most from this noise. I'd give this CD a rating of 5/10 for the
sound, and 8/10 for the performance. And I still think it's worth
having (and the fold-out digi-pak-type packaging is appealing)

The first show is credited as being from Essen, Germany 2-Jul-78, but is
in fact the Rockpalast show, Koeln, 21-Jun-78 which was broadcast on TV
on 2-Jul-78 & 23-Dec-78. The second show is from The Montreux Jazz
Festival, Switzerland, 12-Jul-80. A much better quality recording of the
Koeln show can be found on The Rise & Rise Of Declan MacManus CD.
Quality: Both recordings sound fine. Although the 2nd. show sounds a
little better, the 1st. show is the stronger of the two. In the
2nd. show Bruce Thomas does some incredibly bad singing on

SWEETWATER (73:57)
[95; CD; Moonlight ML 9503 (Czech Republic)]
EC & Gerry Garcia live at Sweetwater, Mill Valley, California, 29-Apr-89.
The performance goes from a solo acoustic set to a wind-up full band at
the end, with the band comprised at various times of Nick Lowe, Jerry
Scheff, James Burton, Austin Delone, Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Scott
Matthews, Sammy Hagar & Pete Sears.
Quality: Good to very good. A little wobbly on the high end, either a
heavily duped soundboard or very good audience recording. My ears
adjusted quickly to the sound quality. The show strikes me as
particularly bland, especially as more band members join in. It
turns more and more into the jam session it is (and I don't mean
that in a good way!), and after a while EC isn't even running the
mic as various unknown voices take over the vocals and stage
patter. Good between song chat from EC, particularly during "God's
Comic". "CC Rider" couldn't sound more lifeless. However, if you
like the Grateful Dead kind of airy shuffle then this may appeal
more to you than it did me. Bruce White {brucew8940@aol.com}
I love this disc, EC is funny, chatty & charming. Has a feeling
of trotting out old favourites & trying out new material in front
of a friendly, but discerning crowd. The last 2 tracks are
pointless jams, but the acoustic part is cool & loose-limbed
(great version of "Radio Sweetheart") - Eddie Gorodetsky

handmade copies. Nice packaging.
Quality: Sound is pretty good, like a very good audience recording. I'd
recommend it for the great version of Veronica that starts with a
slower arrangement. It's also the show where EC refers to the
talk on the Internet about his 'quitting', telling everyone not
to be sad and promising, "I'll be back" - Alison
