Bootleg Recordings
==================
Note: Some boots here are rated (by Joachim Weisbrod) using a +/0/- system.
'+' doesn't mean comparable to a studio album, it's just a relative
rating concerning the circumstances under which such an album is
recorded.

ACOUSTIC TALES LIVE (53:39)
[19__-__-__; CD; Three Cool Cats TTC 039]
Live solo performance. Landgraaf, 15-May-89.
Quality: Nice performance, particularly "I Want You" & "Pump It Up", but
it suffers from being an audience recording. The quality
fluctuates sometimes and you can hear members of the audience
talking. (3 out of 5) - Paul Hosken {paul.hosken@dlr.de}

Local radio KFOG broadcast of the Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco show,
15-May-96. EC is only accompanied by Steve Nieve. Complete set.
Quality: Great show, great sound quality - Harson Flenco
{harson@ix.netcom.com}
The sound is very good (8/10) and the performance is as brilliant
as I remembered it (9/10). "My Dark Life" is particularly good. A
couple of brief audio glitches here & there, but nothing too
serious - T.J.Young {young057@gold.tc.umn.edu}
Very nice performance, excellent quality. Sounds more like it's
from master tapes than a radio broadcast. EC is very relaxed and
talkative. One of the best boots around - Francois Drouin
{francois.drouin@dassault-aviation.fr}
I'm going to be excessively hard on this and say that although it
is an excellent boot, the sound could be better (9/10). I can
also think of better song selections, it naturally relies too
much on tracks from All This Useless Beauty. (Performance: 9/10)

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PRESS CONFERENCE
[19__-__-__; 7" 33 1/3 picture disc; BSAPC+7-1]
Although this picture disc contains pictures relating to EC on both sides
(the cover photo from Nashville & More and interview text from the
'Spike' era) its contents seems to contain no EC. The press conference is
in connection with their 'Conspiracy of Hope' tour. 4 or 5 artists are
featured - Tracy Chapman and possibly Sting, Peter Gabriel & Bruce
Springsteen. In the runout grooves is "Porky" and "Orlake", so possibly
this is a legitimate promo disc.
ANGRY YOUNG SOD (53:24)

Quality: Variable - sometimes very thin - Kube, Peter {p.kube@rz.uni-sb.de}
EC is relaxed, playful & spontaneous. Sound is wobbly at times.

Quality: Very good - Andrew Smallman {smallman@cyberspace.com}

Quality: Mix is very good, all instruments & vocals are exactly where you

Gary {slug@mail.utexas.edu}
Performance: 7/10. Sound: 7/10 - John Steffes
{john.c.steffes@jci.com}
It sounds like it was lifted from Steves monitor mix. As such,
the keyboard parts have a clarity that is seldom heard on live
recordings. Aside from the keys, the bass and drums are remarkably
clear as is EC's voice. This is one of the clearest recordings of
his voice I have ever heard with what sounds like very little to
no effects on it. The only thing that is at all distant is the
guitar. This is a fascinating show full of old favorites heard
from a fresh perspective. I have very seldom heard a disc that
sounds as if you are on stage as opposed to in the seats, but
this is definitely one of them - Eddie Gorodetsky {eddieg@cerf.net}

There's 2.5 minutes of dead air between tracks 2 & 3 while a technical
problem is fixed that should have been edited out.
Quality: Sounds great, 8-9. I'd give it a 10 but the keyboards are mixed
too high and the bass is too quiet. Performance is at least an 8.

[CD]
EC sings other artists' songs in the studio. Track listing is as for The
Great Lost Album.
Quality: Poor - Paul Hosken {paul.hosken@dlr.de}
Tough to rate because the songs are fantastic, and the
performance of EC & the Confederates make them even better. It
makes a change hearing EC use a laid-back bluesy approach. I
listen to this a lot, and that's the best testimony. On the other
hand the sound quality is terrible - the tape hiss on the quieter
songs makes them almost unlistenable. The dynamic range is also
bad. The Great Lost Album & Barbados Mega Mixes are similar
to this, but in a better quality. For those who can wait, EC is
intending to release this set one day! - Timothey E Young

ELVIS COSTELLO WITH STEVE NIEVE (JAPAN TOUR 1999)
[9904; 2xCDR; NO SMOKERS MFC 2-99208]
Complete Costello & Nieve show, Fukuoka, 8-Feb-99.
Quality: Audience DAT. The sound quality is not good. This show was a
clubhouse gig and because of this the sound is often split.
However, the atomosphere of show is more friendly from that of a
hall concert. Elvis sings with care, particularly on "God Give
Me Strength". The bad sound quality is a pity, but despite this
the boot still has a strong point. In such a small venue the
unmiced last track was recorded clearly, so the climax can be
enjoyed.

BBC broadcast of the Costello/Bacharach show at the Royal Festival Hall,
29-Oct-98.
EVERYDAY I PLAY THE BOOT
[2xLP(+7"); Off-Beat (COS-1/2/3/4 inscribed on discs)]
Almost the complete set from Pier 84, NYC, 10-Aug-83. This was originally
released with the first 2 songs badly mismastered. The rest of both discs
was fine, pretty standard bootleg quality. Shortly afterwards the
bootlegger released a 7" with corrected versions of the tracks. It was
supposed to be given away free to people who had already bought the album.
(Honour among thieves!) The single came in a plain white sleeve with
record labels that were different to the album labels, but in the same
style: a comic-book-like picture of a man in a fedora reading a newspaper,
orange on one side and white on the other (no type).
Quality: ECIS reports that copy quality of this audience recording varies
from very good mono to poor. The fine playing from EC+A & the TKO
Horns makes up for the shartfall in quality. The version of
"Tears Before Bedtime" with the Horns is probably quite unusual.
This has such bad sound quality that I didn't even bother to tape
it! - Melinda Hale {xmelinda@iglou.com} (Maybe Melinda had a
mismastered copy!)

EXIT
[2xLP; Toasted Records 2S 919]
Disc 1 is the Canadian promo LP El Mocambo Club, disc 2 is of the same
1977 gig that's on the Armed & Dangerous boot (Riviera Theatre, Chicago,
3-Dec-77). Manufactured by Finestkind Records & Tapes LTD, Sydney, New
South Wales, Australia. There is no name on the album but the cover
consists of a girl wearing boxer's shorts and robe, slightly open, as she
leans against the ropes. She is under an exit sign, so possibly the album
is called Exit. The girl on the back cover is VERY bizarre! The photos
on this professionally packaged album are by Helmut Newton.
Quality: Good quality stereo FM broadcasts or PA recordings.

As the title suggests this is a compilation from various live sources of

considering the range of sources. Rumour has it that only 10-15 copies
were made.

(THE) GREAT LOST ALBUM (54:13)
[CD; Caucasian Records CD 002]
From liner notes: This album was recorded in early 1991 and was scheduled
as the follow up to Mighty Like A Rose. All tracks are cover versions.
The album was eventually officially released as Kojak Variety.
Quality: 7/10. All tracks are fully produced studio recordings, but at
times the sound is a little muddy and the tape hiss is high.
Despite this I'd recommend it. (The Barbados Mega Mixes CD is
supposed to sound better) - Paul Hosken {paul.hosken@dlr.de}

GREATEST HITS LIVE (70:26)
[94; CD; Chartbusters CHER-004-A]
This seems to be portions of other boots stitched together into one show.
Possible sources could be El Mocambo, Stiffs Live, Westwood One shows, etc.
There is no liner notes or documentation.
Quality: Overall the sound quality is good to excellent, but some tracks
sound pretty awful. There's a lot of high end and hiss, as if
radio broadcasts were the main source. Nice to have for the live

CD is basically the same as the one with the same name on the Amcos label
except that a second version of "Bama Lama Bama Loo" (from 'Later With
Jools Holland', 16-May-95) is included as the last track.
Quality: Sound quality is quite good, with only "Everybody's Crying Mercy"
being marred by brief fade-outs and buzzes. And, of course, EC's
voice is a rather hoarse (except for the 2nd. version of "Bama
Lama Bama Loo" where he sounds in fine shape) - T.J.Young
