Elvis observations

Joe Nick Patoski and Joe Frolik

Extract:

Among those who caught Sahm's Thursday night set was Elvis Costello. Although he's painted as a shy and angry guy by the press, Elvis was anything but while hanging out around town this week.

Wednesday night he rubbed elbows with the kids at Raul's and hustled pool at Mother Earth. While he was digging Sir Doug, Elvis' band, the Attractions, were catching the Fabulous Thunderbirds' last date at Antone's. Sitting in with the 'Birds was ivory tickler Alby Copley, taking a busman's holiday from Roomful of Blues.

Austin, New York and Los Angeles were the only two-night venues on Costello's Armed Funk tour. Elvis' manager, Jake Riviera, says that's because "Austin's a rock 'n' roll town."

On the town: Elvis Costello has another full house at the Opera House tonight.
