Brutal Youth

Elvis Costello

Seth Rogovoy

Elvis' latest kicks off like 1978's Armed Forces, with musical and verbal kicks and leaps. He's reunited with the Attractions, whose Steve Nieve provides the signature rinky-dink keyboards that so colored Costello's earliest efforts and made junk out of art (or was it vice-versa?). Along the way through the 15 cuts, Costello nods to most all periods of his varied career, including the masterful Spike ("This Is Hell" as the answer to "God's Comic") and This Year's Model. There's plenty of Beatles' 'quotes to keep you busy and even some well-timed Tommy-era Who quotes. It's a shame Roy Orbison's not around to record "Still Too Soon to Know." Costello's nightmarish image of hell: "'My Favorite Things' are playing again and again, but it's by Julie Andrews and not by John Coltrane." Even still, a lyric sheet would've been appreciated.
