Elvis Costello
Charles Zavalick
Caught Elvis Costello and The Attractions at Convention Hall in Asbury Park last Sunday. Touring with a smoking four-piece horn section, the El is finally playing his unique brand of high-energized rock without the bitterness that turned off much of America in the late 70s.
The result was a scintillating performance punctuated throughout with jazzed up renditions of his new and older material.
Costello was backed up by an interesting new British band called Aztec Camera (no relation to Aztec Two-Step), also a high energy group led by 19-year-old singer-songwriter Roddy Frame. The band appeared hot, reminding me of Squeeze when they first hit the American shores, with Frame doing a nice solo number on acoustic guitar to end the surprising set.
However, a terrible sound system left many of the lyrics indecipherable, particularly on the hard rockers, and ruined what could have been a very strong U.S. debut.
