Elvis at the Coliseum
Jim Sullivan
If it's August, it must be Elvis on the Cape. Elvis Costello (in photo) and company — and this year's company includes not only the three Attractions but the four-piece TKO Horns — storm into Cape Cod Coliseum Saturday night. You might harbor some reservations, considering the Coliseum's notorious reputation for locker room-like sound. Well, nothing's for certain in this world, but last year the sound people obviously worked hard and no one could carp. You might also be concerned that on his new album, Punch the Clock, Costello seems more delighted by restrained pop mannerisms than biting rock 'n' roll. Last year, the live versions of Imperial Bedroom songs cut the studio takes to ribbons. Costello began his tour in England, and reports in England's Melody Maker trumpet Costello's "venomous intent and sheer compassion." All of which means the evening is shaping up to be one of persuasive and passionate rock 'n' roll. Aztec Camera opens around 7:30.
