Rock 'n' roll's mad genius genius delivers superior disc

Elvis Costello & The Attractions / Blood & Chocolate

James Muretich

Elvis Costello is rock's mad genius, a bespectacled eccentric prone to name changes (this album refers to him as Costello, Declan MacManus and Napoleon Dynamite) and a prolific tunesmith who can seemingly pen an entire album while taking a bath.

Only six months after the brilliant King of America album, Costello rejoins his backup band The Attractions to deliver a superior record that balances cutting ballads with his best rockers since 1978's "Oliver's Army."

It is a supremely casual yet compelling disc that shows Costello at the top of his craft. From his clever lines ("you always look so disappointed when I take my stockings off") to his engaging emotional rock style, he has crafted another Costello classic.
