Lee Moore

Americathon

The year is 1998. The United States is forced to hold a telethon to raise $200 billion to save itself from falling into the hands of a jogging-shoe manufacturer who holds the mortgage on the country. That's the premise of Americathon, a summer offering from United Artists and Lorimar.

John Ritter plays the president and Meat Loaf appears as car‑eater "Oklahoma Roy" Budnitz. Elvis Costello plays British rocker Earl Manchester, who leads the telethon band and performs his own composition, "Crawling to the U.S.A." Harvey Korman is the show's host, Monty Rushmore.

Directed by Neil Israel, Americathon's story was cooked up with the aid of former Firesign Theater members Peter Bergman and Philip Proctor.
