Garda swoop at Macroom Festival nets 10 drug dealers

Ten drug dealers from around the country are to appear in court following the biggest ever swoop here by Drug Squad detectives and plain clothes gardai.

Almost 80 seizures were made by Cork Drug Squad detectives Pat Carey and Teddy Holland, and Gardai Denis Keane (Macroom) and John Moore (Clonakilty) at the Macroom Mountain Dew Festival at the weekend.

This is the highest number of detections ever made at any event here. Last year gardai made almost 70 detections at the same festival and many people appeared at the local court and were dealt with by Justice M. J. O'Hara on a variety of drug charges.

This weekend members of the Drug Squad seized thousands of pounds worth of cannabis resin and LSD. At least four people will appear on charges at Macroom Court next Wednesday. While the Macroom weekend haul was large, the fact that detectives believe that they have caught a number of dealers is an additional feather in the cap of the Drug Squad.

A garda spokesman said last night that as a result of these detections a number of people would be appearing in court in due course.

He said that at a time when drug notices were being displayed outside every garda station in the country warning of the dangers, it was alarming to see so many young people involved in the misuse of drugs.

It is understood that many of the cases investigated at the weekend involved Dublin and Cork teenagers.

Meanwhile over 20,000 music fans attended two concerts at the 5th Macroom Mountain Dew festival on Saturday and yesterday, when several world-claes bands played in what was the biggest and best festival to date, write Declan Colley and Mark Woods.

Yesterday's concert proved to be a feast for both the purist and the entertainment seeker. On the one hand there was the first appearance in an open air venue of the newly-formed Paul Brady Band and prior to that the striking stage performance of the Q-Tips.

For the purist the Paul Brady Band part in the five-act show was excellent. Although they were on stage for only 45 minutes they nevertheless served up a scintillating display of electrifying rock music which emphasised once and for all that this group is by far the most talented rock band in the country.

Formed only a few months ago they gave sufficient reason as to why their album Hard Station is one of the most talked about records on the market. Brady's voice was sharp and strong while his guitar playing was up to his own high standard. He came into his awn with "Shotgun Brady," a number which brought thunderous roars of approval from the attendance estimated at 11,500, climaxed with "Crazy Dreams" and "Busted Loose."

This afternoon got off to a great start with Scullion and in particular the guitar work of Greg Boland. This three-piece group which, according to reports is to disband later this summer, has taken tremendous strides in the past year and yesterday was no exception.

Vocalist Philip King and Sonny Condell blended extremely well with the exhilarating fingerwork of Boland, whose ovations were well earned.

For many the best act of the afternoon was the show served by the very impressive eight-piece rock 'n' roll band Q-Tips. Their lively and rhythmic notes were reminiscent of the best of the rock and roll bands of years gone by.

They brought the audience to their feet and certainly put the onlookers in the right form for the rest of the concert. Their warm reception at the conclusion of their set was well and truly justified.

Also on the bill were Wishbone Ash, a group which reached great heights back in the '60s and early '70s. They must have brought back happy memories to some of the audience with their gritty hard rock music which made them so popular.

While this group is in the latters years, a product of the new wave movement, the Undertones displayed their own particular brand of "energy music."

Saturday's show was an undoubted success despite some minor incidents during the show by headliners Elvis Costello and the Attractions. The estimated 16,000 crowd showed great appreciation for the music provided by al1 the bands and special guests. The Blues Band in particular, got a very warm reception.

However, the pleasant scenes were slightly marred for some of the audience when Costello hit the stage. There were some minor scuffles as people pressed forward to get closer to the stage and one person was taken to hospital suffering from shock.

New Dublin band The Rhythm Kings started the day off in the early afternoon with an excellent set incorporating some R and B standards as well as some of the band's own originals like "John Wayne" and their new single "Going Steady."

Both the Moondogs and Sniff 'n' Tears played adequate if slightly dull sets, and neither could really have been said to have set the audience alight. So is was left up to the Blues Band and Costello to provide the goods.

The Blues Band got a very enthusiastic reception and belying their ages, delivered a great set, with Paul Jones giving the crowd exactly what they wanted.

Elvis Costello and the Attractions topped the bill in fine style. They played numbers from all four of the band's albums and delighted the crowd with great versions of early numbers like "Alison" and "Watching The Detectives" as well as new songs like the recent single "Clubland."

A surprise addition to the bill was The Jimmy McCarthy Band who followed Costello. They gave an adequate performance and finished off with their new single "Miles of Eyes."
