Secret, Profane & Sugarcane

Elvis Costello

Gene Triplett

When Elvis Costello goes all folkie and country, it's almost hard to believe he was once an angry London punk. Of course, he has a lot of help from fellow Coward Brother T Bone Burnett producing the intimate acoustic sound of Secret, Profane and Sugarcane an uneven but generally satisfying collection of rural gems mixed in with Costello's lapses into heart-clutching, oh-so-British melodrama ("She Handed Me a Mirror," "She Was No Good," "Red Cotton").

The fiddles, dobros and mandolins ring true on the mournful drinking song "Down Among the Wines and Spirits," which the artist sometimes known as Howard Coward originally penned for Loretta Lynn. The same holds for the melancholy heartbreaker "I Felt the Chill," which he co-wrote with Lynn. One starts to wish the Coal Miner's Daughter had participated in the proceedings, but "estranged half-sister Emmylou Coward" (aka Harris) adds a lilting feminine touch to the accordion and fiddle sway of "The Crooked Line."

And it's easy to hear Howard and Henry Coward (aka T Bone) having a good time with the midtempo swing of "Sulphur to Sugarcane." With Burnett at the board and a stellar supporting cast that includes Jerry Douglas (Dobro), Jim Lauderdale (harmony vocals), Dennis Crouch (double bass), Mike Compton (mandolin), Stuart Duncan (fiddle) and Jeff Taylor (accordion), Costello couldn't go completely wrong.
