Elvis Costello brings his rowdy inspiration to Fair Park

Hard to believe, but the short, bespectacled man standing backstage among the Swiss cheese and cold cuts, politely greeting well-wishers, was Elvis Costello.

This was the new Costello. Accessible, smiling, shaking hands, being sociable. But not exactly gregarious. After more than a half-dozen years as pop music's sour iconoclast, Declan MacManus (Mr. Costello) was not about to become one of the Gabors.

What was clear was that the British singer's 1970s gloom had given way to a 1980s...
