Elvis Costello has mellowed considerably since the late 1970s when he would strut about stage like some overwound clockwork effigy of Woody Allen.
The snarling, curled-up lip has gone and the act is far less aggressive than in his formative days. But Elvis and his band proved on Monday night at Derby's Assembly Rooms that they are still one of Britain's major pop attractions.
His distinctive vocals are ideally suited to the ballad and one of the highlights of Monday's 1½-hour set was the beautiful "He's Got You" which was enhanced by the excellent keyboards of Bruce Thomas.
The quiet "I'll Take Good Care of You" was another high spot.
But there was still room for the old classics such as "Oliver's Army," "Radio, Radio" and "I Can't Stand Up" as well as the pick of the best of the new album Trust, like "Clubland," "Lovers Walk" and "Strict Time."
The blend of music is just right and the more mellow Costello can be assured of a very popular British tour.
