Mighty Like A Rose

Elvis Costello

Susan Whitall

Costello's latest album recalls Spike and Blood & Chocolate, but even more surprising are the references back to his mod Attractions style, without the musical input of his former band (although Pete Thomas does play drums on one cut). "The Other Side of Summer" and "Georgie and Her Rival" have that classic Costello sound of the late '70s-early '80s, combining spiteful lyrics and happy, high-energy music. But he's a better-rounded kind of guy these days, so there is also poignancy; he sings his wife Cait's "Broken" in a pared-down, Sinead O'Connor sort of arrangement, and "Sweet Pear" is an unabashed love song. There are two songs he co-wrote with Paul McCartney, and you won't need to check the credits to tell which ones. But one of the best parts of a Costello album is letting those great lines ("They'll be howling by midnight / they'll be drooling by dawn") take over your brain.
