Elvis Costello

Finally, here is the artist's long goodbye to his old label in the form of a greatest hits package he personally selected. What's the inevitable, sardonic Costello spin on all this? The cassette version of the set contains more songs than the compact disc set. Is this a boost from Costello for the non-Volvo masses who can't or won't buy CD players? Perhaps. Intriguingly, there is also a happier tone to the songs chosen for the cassettes than on the CD collection. In his liner notes, Costello asks the listener to decide why he grouped songs together in the order he did, but he won't help with any shortcuts. Ultimately these sets are for the diehard fan who has all the albums but wants more insight into the fascinating topography of Costello's brain. Casual fans with less money would do better to look for the single disc Columbia greatest hits package of a few years back.
