A bunch of Stiffs

Kevin Anderson

The Stiffs were a motley crew if ever I saw one. They were at any moment, either drunk in the bar, playing pool and pinball, on stage, sleeping, watching TV, being interviewed, or tuning up. On stage they were either in the right band at the wrong time (or vice versa), loose as hell and all over the place.

Wreckless Eric was first on, with Ian Dury on drums. "Rags and Tatters," "Personal Hygiene" and "Semaphore Signals" were personal faves, but I was by no means knocked out. The gaps between the bands were short, so there was no time to be bored.

I think I liked Nick Lowe best, although the sound was awful. His set was short and he was joined near the end by Larry Wallis for a rockin' and rollin' performance of "Police Car."

Ian Dury next, and I think he beat Elvis Costello, hands down, in the popularity stakes, performing most of the songs from the album and winning everyone over with "Sweet Gene Vincent" and the obvious singalong Ian song, "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll."

Elvis and The Attractions are musically, pretty slick, but lack the quality of the records. Elvis seems awkward at times, although, he's obviously sure of himself. Their set was quite predictable, but it had its moments, when there were three drummers playing together. In fact I'd swear I saw Elvis smile at least once.

All in all, a perfect gig to go to if you just wanted to get pissed and have fun.
