Adrenalin for the soul

Aileen O'Reilly

Elvis Costello / The Point

Elvis Costello, the Woody Allen of new age pop, has the ability to be nasally infuriating at his worst and a vocal rail-roading genius the other 85% of the time.

Last night's gig showed both sides as Costello and The Attractions brought their five month world tour to an end in front of their adoring fans.

The music is sheer adrenalin for the soul, with Steve Nieve, on keyboards, and Pete Thomas, on drums, forming a formidable partnership of sound.

Digging deep in the archives of the past 17 years Elvis unearthed some real classics and married them to the newer sound he's been toying around with. The likes of "I Want You" was quickly tempered with "Accidents Will Happen," before he returned to the style of "Watching The Detectives."

Of course, just when things were hotting up beautifully the gig was into extra time. Nevertheless, Costello and Co. managed to pack in the wonders of "Oliver's Army," "Alison" and the stampede-inducing "Pump It Up."
