Let us ponder on the meaning of Elvis Costello

Eamon Carr

"I don't make records for the critics," insists Elvis Costello. "I make them for the people who buy 'em." He's talking about the initial reviews of his latest album Mighty Like A Rose.

Quite!

Over his last few albums Elvis has displayed a tendency to become increasingly complex and convoluted. Thankfully his musical puzzles have frequently been fun.

The new album is a sombre affair. A bit like a young Leonard Cohen with a boil on his backside. There are some tunes which hit you first time. Other tracks infiltrate your subconscious and demand attention when you're least expecting it.

Sporting an ancient alchemist-style beard, Elvis seems to be saying he's put away the things of a child.

Hot news on Huey

Eamon Carr

Huey Lewis's mid-'70s band Clover played on Elvis Costello's debut album ... and Huey was impressed by producer Nick Lowe's cavalier attitude.

When Clover broke up, Huey took a leaf out of Lowe's book and got together a few mates to play rock 'n' roll on Monday nights in a neighbourhood bar in San Francisco.

They were hot sessions. Pretty soon they had a manager. In '80 they got a record deal. Within a few years their powerhouse boogie was crashing the charts time after time.

Eventually they were playing mega-venues where the dressing rooms alone were bigger than the bar they started out in.

Now after a three year break, they're back with a new album Hard At Play. It's quintessential rough and tumble Huey Lewis And The News rock 'n' roll. Don't cha just love it!
