Elvis and Cait find their high tax haven

The Evening Herald

Elvis Costello and his Irish wife Cait O'Riordan have decided to move permanently to Ireland. The two have just bought a house "on the edge of the Pale," of which Elvis firmly refused to disclose the address when I talked to him last night.

"Suffice it to say that I should be that at this very moment, wielding an enthusiastic paintbrush."

Elvis (whose real name is Declan MacManus, and whose father Ross used to play with Joe Loss Orchestra) doesn't care a hoot about having to pay soaring taxes in Ireland.

"When I was making most money in England. the tax levels there were ferocious too. Now that I'm leaving, they've dropped them. I simply give up. You can't beat the system."

So it would appear. Although his roots are probably more firmly in Merseyside than anywhere else, Ireland is where he feels most comfortable. "Given my way, I'd just play gigs in Dublin and forget London altogether." But reality will mean a fair amount of commuting.
