Composición telefónica
Posiblemente el hecho de que esa primera colaboración, God give me strength, fuera nominada para los Premios Grammy, aceleró el proceso. "La primera canción la compusimos por teléfono, una forma bastante poco usual, y un año después nos encerramos con un piano en una habitación de hotel para concluir el resto. Cada uno aportó sus ideas y las fuimos trabajando juntos hasta crear un puente musical entre ambos. Al final nos dimos cuenta de que todas eran canciones trágicas, todas hablan de la pérdida del amor".Painted from memory recoge 12 canciones interpretadas todas ellas por Costello con el acompañamiento de una amplia orquesta de cuerdas. "Muchos dicen que el resultado es más Bacharach que Costello porque asocian las canciones de Bacharach con la sonoridad de las grandes orquestas, pero se sorprenderían, por ejemplo, si supieran que en una canción como Toledo, que según ellos es puro Bacharach, yo he aportado más del ochenta por ciento. Si se comparan las canciones de este álbum con los trabajos anteriores de Burt, se ve que la diferencia es notable. Hacer siempre algo diferente es un auténtico reto para mí, siempre lo ha sido", afirma.
Ahora el guitarrista de jazz Bill Frisell, con el que compartió un disco hace unos años, vuelve a unir su nombre al de Costello. "Bill está preparando una versión jazzística de los temas de Painted from memory para saxo trombón, clarinete, trompeta, guitarra, bajo y batería. El disco aparecerá en marzo y el tema principal lo cantará Cassandra Wilson. Me parece muy importante que mis canciones las canten otras personas, así cobran una vida nueva".
