Elvis Costello going on-line for chat, multimedia concert

Deborah Wilker

Add Elvis Costello to the growing list of celebrities trolling cyberspace in search of new fans.

The eclectic rock singer and songwriter will unveil his new album, Elvis Costello's Kojak Variety, via "a multimedia performance next month in London," according to an announcement from his record label, Warner Bros.

Costello will spend May 17 chatting with fans on-line and will then perform a concert at a small London theater to be sent via satellite to radio stations around the world. (No word on which radio stations may air the concert locally.) Costello's on-line chat forum will be Warner Bros. Records' interactive talk show, Cyber-Talk, accessible to subscribers of America Online and CompuServe.

The live radio concert and computer "talk show" package is just another way record labels launch new albums amid the increasingly cluttered media landscape.

Costello's last album was 1994's Brutal Youth. He is planning to tour this fall.
