The Best Of Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Scott Benarde
Costello hasn't hit the charts much in a career that has now spanned almost a decade. This 16-song collection makes one wonder why and also illustrates why he's one of the most influential and engaging songwriter-producers in the business today. If you're not familiar with his work this is more than a good introduction. If you are a fan, this album can also be a frustrating one for it omits several of Costello's strongest compositions. While songs such as "Watching the Detectives" and "Oliver's Army" are included, other important songs in Costello's repertoire such as "Man Out of Time" and "The Angels Want to Wear My Red Shoes" have been omitted. Those, however, are supposedly included on a forthcoming CD version of the album.
