Elvis Costello's covers show true insight
Elvis Costello / Kojak Variety
David Wild / Rolling Stone
Elvis Costello has never been known for jumping on trends, and Kojak Variety actually was recorded a few years back, before the recent run of covers albums. The album finds the former angry young man paying homage to songs associated with Little Richard ("Bama Lama Bama Loo"), Bob Dylan ("I Threw It All Away"), The Kinks ("Days"), Mose Allison ("Everybody's Cryin' Mercy"), among many others. The selections show the insight of a true musicologist. Most of them work on a visceral level, thanks in part to the great band, which features James Burton, Mark Ribot, Jim Keltner, Jerry Scheff, Larry Knechtel and Attraction Pete Thomas.
