Costello's aim still true
Elvis Costello and the Attractions / 2½ Years
David Wild / Rolling Stone
Few if any figures in rock 'n' roll history ever got off to a better start in their recording career than Elvis Costello did in the late '70s.
Now as part of a high quality reissue program by Rykodisc, the company has made a box-set out of Costello's uniformly excellent first three albums — My Aim Is True, This Year's Model and Armed Forces — along with Live At El Mocambo, a promotional-only live album that has been heavily bootlegged over the years. The sound has been noticeably upgraded, and the studio albums feature a wonderful assortment of bonus tracks. Whatever you make of Costello's subsequent recording career, it's hard not to be impressed by these 2½ Years.
