'It was a different Dave Edmunds'

Dave Edmonds

My famous namesake shot to prominence in the late 60s as the guitarist in Love Sculpture, who hit the charts with an amazing version of Sabre Dance.

It was a vastly different Dave Edmunds who had the 1,200-strong Beau Sejour audience leaping about on Sunday night at one of Ace Promotions' most successful concerts.

Now the complete rock professional, he and his sidekick Nick Lowe, and the other two members of Rockpile, produced one of the best shows I have seen at Beau Sejour.

There was little way they could fail. The songs were direct and crisply played and had the sort of driving, insistent beat which makes keeping still difficult.

A Guernsey audience rarely has reacted better to a visiting group and the excitement reached fever pitch with a rousing version of Singing the Blues.

I Knew the Bride, Girls Talk and Queen of Hearts were instantly recognisable and played to perfection, but one of the stand out items for me was an all too short version of I Hear You Knocking.

One disappointment was that the band did not play any of Lowe's hit songs, but this is only a minor criticism of a fine show.

Supporting Rockpile, Elvis Costello and the Attractions were playing in Guernsey for the second time — and it is no exaggeration to say that they were 100 per cent better this time.

With keyboards player Steve Naive back in the line up after his accident, the sound was a lot fuller and songs such as Watching the Detectives and Oliver's Army were all the better for it.

But, though the audience reacted well, there was not the same contact between performer and fan as when Rockpile were on stage.

But Costello seemed a lot happier during this performance and the audience was appreciative of his efforts.

Local group Blue Movies opened the show, much to the delight of their band of loyal followers from La Trelade.

They started strongly, but seemed to lose their way a bit in the middle of their set.

But a full decibel blast of Quo's Sweet Caroline to finish produced the expected cries for an encore.
