The second of Elvis Costello's appearances at the Olympia Theatre last week found the bespectacled one alone on the stage with a few guitars, an umbrella of the world and some snaps of his holidays. With all those props behind him he set sail on an unforgettable journey through almost two and a half hours of sheer brilliance.
He told stories, he told jokes, he chatted and danced with the crowd and at times used their voices as a backing band with both hilarious and effective results. But above all that was the voice and the songs, many taken from his more recent albums which he delivered with such powerful emotion.
It was a treat to capture these songs at such a raw state and it was clear that he too enjoyed performing them in that way.
One of the best shows of the year.
