The album title, believe it or not, is named after the guy who invented Pot Noodles. Who would have thought that Costello would be so trite? Perhaps, he's keen to have a laugh now that he's chalked up more than 30 years in the business.

The album was written and recorded in a week and there are moments when you can sense that here. Some of the songs — although quintessentially Costello in sound — seem little more than an afterthought.

But, this being Costello, there are some very fine moments indeed and his anger and passion aren't hidden that far from the surface. Long a careful chooser of collaborators, he has roped in Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley fame and US singer-songwriter Jonathan Rice.

"Flutter & Wow" is the most affecting song here — a bruised and beautiful meditation on lovesickness.
