The Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions

Charles Lundy

Including at least one song from each of his previous 10 albums, Best of ... highlights Costello's work as completely as a 45 RPM record promotes a single album. It is filled to capacity with outstanding songs — every one deserves the honor — but dozens of others are left off. This proves no single album possible can do justice to the enormity of Costello's musical achievements.

If called Greatest Hits, this album would be a 45 single because Costello has only two near-hit songs — "Alison" and "Everyday I Write The Book." Both are included in Best of...

Although no new material is presented, the classics are more than enough to sell the album.

It is just as well Costello never has achieved critical pop success; if he had, he would stop trying to attain it. Then we would not have a Best of...Volume II to look forward to.
