Elvis Costello Plans Live CD Release, Symphony Tour

Katherine Silkaitis

Elvis Costello will release a live album, recorded at The Hague as part of the North Sea Jazz Fest, on Feb. 24, 2006. My Flame Burns Blue will be released on Deutsche Grammophon and features Costello in concert with Metropole Orkest, a 52-piece jazz orchestra from the Netherlands. My Flame Burns Blue will also feature a bonus disc of a 45-minute suite from Il Sogno, Costello’s 2004 full-length orchestral work.

The album features reworked Costello classics, such as “Almost Blue,” “Clubland” and “Watching the Detectives,” alongside never-before released compositions and creative collaborations.

Opening track “Hora Decubitus,” completed in the aftermath of September 11, is the result of an invitation by Charles Mingus’ widow, Sue, to contribute lyrics to the legendary bassist and composer’s works. The title track also features Costello adding words to music, this time to Billy Strayhorn’s final composition, “Blood Count.”

Other tracks that have never been released include “Speak Darkly, My Angel,” “Can You Be True?” and “Upon a Veil of Midnight Blue,” a tune originally written for and recorded by bluesman Charles Brown as “I Wonder How She Knows.”

The accompanying bonus disc is Costello’s 2004 release, Il Sogno, originally commissioned by the Italian Dance Company Aterbaletto for their adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In support of the album, Costello and longtime Attractions pianist Steve Nieve will begin a worldwide tour of symphony halls, performing with local orchestras, in January 2006. The concerts will consist of a suite from Il Sogno, followed by songs arranged for voice, piano and orchestra by Costello and Nieve, along with Sy Johnson, Bill Frisell and Vince Mendoza.
