Elvis Costello

Pop Scene / United Feature Syndicate

Q: Okay, I give up. Who is Elvis Costello? I've heard a couple of his songs on the radio, but no one seems to know anything about him.

A: Elvis Costello is definitely something of a mystery man. He popped up in England recently, with an album on Stiff Records called My Aim Is True. It became one of the bigger-selling import items of the year, and Columbia Records picked up on it for release in the States.

He's an unlikely candidate for rock stardom — thin and nervous, with black, horn-rimmed glasses, he looks like a rock and roll Woody Allen.

Although hard information on Costello is hard to come by, rumor has it that his name is really Declan Costello, and before entering the rock arena, he was a computer operator.

A series of New York appearances recently won him a lot of fans. Only time will tell whether or not Costello will drop back into obscurity.
