Costello country

Peter Holt

The Pope of Pop, better known as Elvis Costello, made a rare solo appearance at a "secret" gig last week.

Costello, with just his guitar in hand, played at the Choka-doobie Club at Portlands pub, off Great Portland Street, in front of 100 people.

His lunch earlier in the day with American country star Ricky Skaggs must have affected him. "It was country-influenced stuff and they were all completely new songs," my spy tells me. "He said he had amnesia for the night."

Costello, who last appeared live at the Albert Hall in December, is now taking a break from recording and touring.
