1977 music roundup: The top of the pop

Robert Hilburn

Elvis Costello
My Aim Is True

You'd better be good if you're a rock 'n' roller who decides to use the first name Elvis. Costello (aka Declan Patrick MacManus) is. There are some moments in the British singer-songwriter's first LP that are as ragged as his L.A. club debut last November. But the lyrics are among the most well-crafted and provocative of any new arrival in years. Costello looks a bit like Buddy Holly, sounds something like Graham Parker and shares Dylan's sarcastic, angry outlook. He should be back with another album and tour by the spring. Catch him.
