Imperial Bedroom

Elvis Costello And The Attractions

Patti Thompson

On the other hand the new Elvis Costello album, Imperial Bedroom, is a pleasant contrast to the Go-Go's childish simplicity. Costello takes the listener on a tour through the mysterious doings of life's imperial bedroom. His extensive use of cliches gives a far reaching effect to the album. All of this combines to make Imperial Bedroom Costello's best effort to date. The first cut on the album, "Beyond Belief," is perhaps one of the best tracks Costello has produced and is certainly the best song on the album. The next tune, "Tears before Bedtime," contrasts with "Shabby Doll" in both musical style and message. In "The Long Honeymoon," Costello spins the tale of a woman who knows that her husband is involved in extracurricular activities:

"Little things just seem to undermine her confidence in him,
He was late this time last week.
Who can she turn to when the chance of coincidence is slim?

The album is filled with the concept of lost love. It is greatly varied in its musical content, and contains many powerful melodies. Overall, the album is excellent. Costello gives a fine, convincing performance, his voice taking on many different qualities for each situation. Imperial Bedroom is one album that goes deeper than the music alone.
