Elvis Costello goes classical

Sue Wilson

It’s a long way from the raw vitriol of punk to performing with a full symphony orchestra, but such creative stretch has become a hallmark of Elvis Costello’s singular 30-year career.

In the past decade he has collaborated with Burt Bacharach, mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie Von Otter, the 52-piece Metropole Orkest jazz ensemble and R&B legend Allen Toussaint. His music has featured in the movies Notting Hill and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me; he was artist-in-residence at UCLA, formed a band, The Imposters, and composed his first full-length orchestral work, Il Sogno (The Dream), commissioned by an Italian dance company for a ballet adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

His orchestral programme has been evolving for about eight years, after he and Attractions/Imposters keyboardist Steve Nieve began performing with orchestras across the US. Following a brief excerpt from Il Sogno, his UK shows will comprise arrangements of songs from 1977 to the present day. The line-up will also feature bass, drums and saxophone, with conductor Clark Rundell at the podium.

As well as Costello originals, such as Watching The Detectives, Shipbuilding and All This Useless Beauty, the set also takes in covers of tracks by Charles Mingus and Charles Aznavour, and the first full orchestral performance of three extracts from The Secret Songs, composed for the Royal Danish Opera as part of the Hans Christian Andersen bicentenary festivities in 2005.

Wed 25th June, Philharmonic Hall, Hope Street, Liverpool, 7.30pm, £15 to £40, sold out, returns only. Tel: 0151 709 3789.
