Costello ‘snubs Britain’

Metro

Former punk rock and new wave pop star Elvis Costello has apparently snubbed his British roots, saying he never wants to play in the UK again.

The chart-topping star, who came to prominence in London’s pub rock scene in the mid-1970s, also directed a tirade of abuse at Glastonbury festival, where he played two years ago.

The 53-year-old said in the Daily Express: “That was F****** dreadful.

“I don’t care if I ever play England again. That gig made up my mind I wouldn’t come back. I don’t get along with it. We lost touch. It’s 25 years since I lived there. I don’t dig it, they don’t dig me.”

But the pop star conceded that the British music scene was still influential, telling the paper: “A lot of good new bands still come out of England but I just don’t feel part of it. British music fans don’t have the same attitude to age as they do in America where young people come to check out, say Willie Nelson. They feel some connection with him and find a place for that music in their lives.”
