For those that bought the American version of El's sensational new LP This Year's Model instead of the European version, "Chelsea" (along with a few other songs like "Night Rally") wasn't included on it.
"Chelsea" is a choppy, fragmented, three minute and six second musical gem, picking up where El's stunning "Watching The Detectives" and "This Year's Girl" left off.
Once again, our beloved (and bespectacled) hero straps on his Fender Jazzmaster gee-tar to deal with the here-today, gone-tomorrow, chic-to-chic trappings of the fashion world.
This riveting single features hypnotic/crash/static drumming; a s-s-s-stuttering lead guitar, and a perky/happy organ all soaring over the top, as Elvis frantically states: "Chelsea / Oh no, it does not move me."
Not surprising, the "Chelsea" single only helps confirm what I've known since I saw ol' El' live in L.A. months and months ago; that ELVIS COSTELLO IS THE MOST IMPORTANT AND EXCITING LYRICAL AND MUSICAL PERSONA TO HAVE EMERGED IN YEARS.
So wouldn't you bloody well know it!
Somebody as damn talented as this lil' twerp is NOT playing Miami on his current package tour with Mink DeVille and Nick "ye olde Basher" Lowe.
The furthest South E.C. and Co. are coming is to Orlando tomorrow night at the Orlando Jai-Alai Fronton (located at the Intersection of Highway 17-92 and Highway 436 in Fern Park).
The place holds 3,500 people, the concert starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are tagged at $6.50 and $7.50.
Now my good friend Brautman, just returned to Miami from a short vacation in New York City, where she caught the Costello/DeVille/Lowe concert last Saturday night at the Palladium.
According to Debbie, "Elvis was just unbelievable. I mean, it was so good. It was fantastic. Oh, It was just the best. He was just unbelievable."
Say why, Debbie. Say why.
"Well, he did some great new songs called 'Accidents Can Happen' and 'Party Girl.' He also did almost all the songs off This Year's Model, along with a lot of songs from My Aim is True. He played the songs all so fast.
"And he had this incredible stage presence. I just couldn't take my eyes off him. He was doing all these things with his hands and eyes. God. 'Chelsea' was just fantastic. And 'Watching The Detectives' was just the best song I've ever heard in concert.
"And his band, now I've seen a million bands and if I had to pick one that was the best it'd be the Attractions. Their sound was just so good and they bunched up all around Elvis on stage. Everyone at the Palladium loved it. Elvis got a standing ovation. He even came back and did an encore."
As for Mink DeVille, Debbie reports "They were irritating. They sounded like a cross between Z.Z. Top, a little Elvis Costello, and Lou Reed.
"And Nick Lowe was so bland. He was less than zero. His band's beat was good, but he sang terribly."
Now should you need anymore convincing to make it up to Orlando tomorrow night just for the absolute joy of witnessing Elvis, I turn you back to Ms. Brautman:
"Elvis is more than this year's model. He's just so great that he's also this year's concert."
