The Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions

Elvis Costello and the Attractions

Gregory Magarian

When this LP was released In Elvis Costello's native UK, it was simply titled The Best of the Man. Listeners on this side of the Atlantic haven't developed the same sort of reverence for Costello's abilities, but this collection Just may do the trick.

Costello completists need not worry about picking up Best of... It has no new material, and, unfortunately, no liner notes to shed light on Costello's career. But the selection of songs is uncontestable, a small miracle when you consider how much great music Costello has produced, and the record is therefore a perfect introduction for the legions of uninitiated:

This album succeeds In displaying Costello's amazing stylistic breadth from the hard-rocking "Peace, Love and Understanding" to the soulful "I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down," the lush pop of "The Only Flame in Town" and the straight country of "A Good Year for the Roses." After listening to all of this, it's hard to deny that Costello is the finest songwriter and one of the most fascinating performers of the last decade.
