Costello rock act refreshing, basic
Rich Mangelsdorff
It's not hard to see why Elvis Costello has emerged as one of England's top new rock acts. He's nothing less than a breath of fresh air.
Excitement and urgency is so central to the makeup of rock music that it's a wonder bands keep forgetting it. Costello came flying in on a superfast "rockabilly" kicker at the Centre Stage Wednesday night, and gave a medium-sized audience little respite thereafter, scarcely pausing between tunes for most of the night.
Costello and quartet get back to the primal basics of rock that delighted British audiences in small clubs during the golden age of the 1960s, when classics of British rock were born every night.
Costello's no-nonsense stage presence may seem to jibe with the image of being a former computer programer, but poses a refreshing contrast to the plastic freneticism one must suffer through these days. He seems much more confident and assertive than his first appearance here late last fall.
If you savor old time rock 'n' roll excitement, you should have been at the Centre Stage Wednesday.
Opening act was a jolly punkish British outfit called Willie Alexander and the Boom Boom Band.
