Costello splits with Riviera after 17 years

Music Week

Elvis Costello is setting up a company to manage his affairs after splitting from manager and business partner Jake Riviera after 17 years.

The Warner Brothers-signed singer-songwriter is in the process of opening offices for the new venture, to be called By Eleven. It will be run by Jill Taylor, who is leaving her post at Riviera's management company Riviera Global.

Neither Costello nor Riviera will comment on the reasons for ending a relationship which began in 1977 when Riviera signed Costello to Stiff Records. A statement declares, "After 17 mighty, furious years we have decided to end our working relationship. We remain good pals and do not invite and will not welcome further questions on this matter."

Both have substantial stakes in Demon Records and subsidiary reissue label Edsel, with Riviera holding the post of chairman while Costello is creative director. "The split will have no effect on their interests in the company or our operations," says Demon/Edsel managing director Pete Macklin.

Similarly, Costello's publishing company Plangent Visions, in which Riviera has an interest, will be unaffected and Riviera will continue to manage regular Costello collaborator Nick Lowe, who is also signed to Plangent Visions, and producer Clive Langer.
